Hi there! I'm Shiphrah, the Web & UI Designer here at Creative Bytes. I build websites that look great and, just as important, feel great to use. Today I want to talk about the thing your visitors notice before they ever read a word: speed.
Okay, real talk. Have you ever tapped a link, watched a blank screen, and hit the back button before the page even loaded? We all have, ¿verdad? (right?) And usually, we just tap the next option on the list.
The quick answer: Yes, a slow website can quietly send customers to your competitor. People expect pages to load and respond quickly, especially on their phones. Even small speed improvements can make a real difference in how many visitors call, book or buy.
Here's what the numbers say
- Making a mobile site just 0.1 seconds faster was linked to an 8.4% lift in retail conversions and a 21.6% lift in lead-gen form progression. (Deloitte/Google via web.dev)
- Google's Core Web Vitals now include INP (Interaction to Next Paint), which measures how quickly your site responds when someone taps or clicks. A "good" score is under 200 milliseconds. (web.dev)
Translation? Speed isn't just a techy detail. It's part of the customer experience, and it shows up in your results.
What usually slows a website down?
From what we see every day, it's rarely one big thing. It's a bunch of small things piling up, poquito a poquito (little by little): oversized photos, too many plugins, heavy pop-ups, and old themes that were never built for phones.
Simple ways to speed things up
- Shrink your images. Huge photo files are the number one culprit. Resize and compress them before uploading.
- Clean out what you don't use. Old plugins, extra tracking scripts and forgotten widgets all add weight.
- Go easy on pop-ups and auto-play videos. They slow things down and can frustrate visitors on mobile.
- Design for phones first. Most of your visitors are probably on a phone, so that's the experience to get right.
- Check it regularly. Speed can slip as you add new content, so make testing a habit.
Try this today (it takes 2 minutes): Go to PageSpeed Insights, type in your website address, and look at the mobile results. Don't panic about the score. ¡Calma! (Stay calm!) Just scroll down to see the top suggestions. That's your to-do list.
Quick questions we hear a lot
Does website speed affect Google rankings? Speed and responsiveness are part of Google's Core Web Vitals, so a faster, smoother site helps you put your best foot forward in search.
My site looks fine on my computer. Is it really slow? It might be! Always check on your phone, using regular cellular data, since that's how many customers will see it.
